2013 Jazz Festival Performers
- Brookline H.S. Jazz Band
We're excited to have the Brookline High School Jazz Ensenble under the direction of Carolyn Castellano as part of our "Future of Jazz" showcase. Members of the program write and arrange their own material. We were pleased to work with them at the JazzBoston High School Jazz Band Showcase at the Boston Public Library in April of this year. We expect great things out of these students!
The NJ&WF welcomes KenYaDig as part of our "Futures of Jazz" feature. A classic sound with a young flair, KenYaDig has been performing at various events and jazz festivals throughout New England, spreading their love and appreciation of jazz to people of all ages. Formed in 2012 after meeting at the Lowell Summer Jazz Day Camp, KenYaDig is a talented jazz band with members consisting of Bobby Bryan (17) on bass guitar, Tim Duffy (17) on piano, Cassandra Pearl (15) on vocals and Matt Pantanella (16) on drums.
- The Lovely Singer Trio with vocalist Lydia Harrell
- Lydia Harrell, aka The LovelySinger, is one of Boston’s finest musical treasures. Her sultry, soulful voice and evocative phrasings have garnered her the attention and respect of the area’s finest musicians and venues. Be it performing with the Boston Pops or serenading Celtics fans with the National Anthem, Lydia’s dedication to extracting the pure essence of song goes virtually unmatched. Consistently performing more than 150 shows a year, in all different styles and settings, Lydia has shown a remarkable ability to mold herself into any musical situation. On November 20th, 2012 she released her new EP The Way, with a capacity crowd performance and CD release party at Boston’s premiere jazz club, Scullers. The LovelySinger trio will also feature Steven Higgs on keys and Barry Lit on drums.

His resume includes a who's-who of jazz luminaries having played with members of The John Scofield Band, The Pat Metheny Group, the world famous violinist Jean-Luc Ponty Band, Tower of Power and many others. Phil brings his trio featuring Dave Zox on upright bass and drummer Glen Watson to Jazz-in-the-Yard on Sept 21st!
- Rollo Tomasi Quartet
The Rollo Tomasi Quartet has been performing in the greater Boston area since 2002. Their slogan, "Jazz Straight Up. Funk Chaser." is truly an apt description for this dynamic foursome. Mixing vibrant original compositions with innovative arrangements of timeless standards, this group pleases audiences of all ages and bridges the gap between jazz and funk. RTQ features Chris Wisdo on guitar, Alex Mekelburg on tenor sax, Steve Conahan on bass and Jim Frey on drums
- Fred Woodard Trio plus One
"I just want to transmit a positive feeling to my audience" That's what Fred Woodard's music does. The eclectic guitarist leads the Boston-based Fred Woodard Trio plus One. Woodard describes the band's music as "straight-ahead jazz spiced with R&B. I like to take sounds from styles other than jazz and adapt them to the jazz format."
